Bible Discussion / Do the Mormons believe in the virgin birth of Christ?
« Last post by Fat on September 13, 2018, 05:42:48 PM »
In a conversation that I had with two Mormons, young ladies in the early 20s, I brought up the fact that Brigham Young taught against the virgin birth of Christ begotten by the Holy Ghost. They looked at me astonished and commented they never heard of such a thing. Further conversations with the young ladies led me to believe that they knew very little about the three Gospels found in the New Testament Scriptures.

Let me post a few quotes from various Mormons some coming from their official doctrine statements.

Brigham Young: “The birth of the Saviour was as natural as are the births of our children; it was the result of natural action. He partook of flesh and blood – was begotten of his Father, as we were of our fathers.” Journal of discourses vol. 8, page 115.

“The Father came down and begat him, the same as we do now…” (The Complete Discourses of Brigham Young, vol. 1, p. 321; February 16, 1849, Salt Lake City)

“Christ was begotten by an immortal Father in the same way that mortal men are begotten by mortal fathers.” (Mormon Doctrine, 1966, p. 547)

“When the Virgin Mary conceived the child Jesus, the Father had begotten him in his own likeness. He was not begotten by the Holy Ghost… Jesus, our elder brother, was begotten in the flesh by the same character that was in the garden of Eden, and who is our Father in Heaven… Now, remember from this time forth, and for ever, that Jesus Christ was not begotten by the Holy Ghost. I will repeat a little anecdote. I was in conversation with a certain learned professor upon this subject, when I replied, to this idea if the Son was begotten by the Holy Ghost, it would be very dangerous to baptize and confirm females, and give the Holy Ghost to them, lest he should beget children, and be palmed upon the Elders by the people, bringing the Elders into great difficulties.” (Journal of Discourses 1:50, 51)

“The birth of the Saviour was as natural as are the births of our children; it was the result of natural action. He partook of flesh and blood – was begotten of his Father, as we were of our fathers.” (Journal of Discourses 8:115)

“The man Joseph, the husband of Mary, did not, that we know of, have more than one wife, but Mary the wife of Joseph had another husband. On this account infidels have called the Savior a bastard. This is merely a human opinion upon one of the inscrutable doings of the Almighty. That very babe that was cradled in the manger, was begotten, not by Joseph, the husband of Mary, but by another Being. Do you inquire by whom? He was begotten by God our heavenly Father. This answer may suffice you—you need never inquire more upon that point.” (Journal of Discourses 11:268)

“In relation to the way in which I look upon the works of God and his creatures, I will say that I was naturally begotten; so was my father, and also my Saviour Jesus Christ. According to the Scriptures, he is the first begotten of his father in the flesh, and there was nothing unnatural about it.” (Journal of Discourses 8:211)

“Now, little boys and girls, when you are confronted by infidels in the world who know nothing of how Christ was begotten, you can say he was born just as the infidel was begotten and born, so was Christ begotten by his Father, who is also our Father—the Father of our spirits—and he was born of his mother Mary. Bible Discussion / Be ye separate
« Last post by Moss on September 11, 2018, 11:57:22 PM »
By C H Spurgeon

“Be ye separate.”
2 Corinthians 6:17

The Christian, while in the world, is not to be of the world. He should be distinguished from it in the great object of his life. To him, “to live,” should be “Christ.” Whether he eats, or drinks, or whatever he does, he should do all to God’s glory. You may lay up treasure; but lay it up in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, where thieves break not through nor steal. You may strive to be rich; but be it your ambition to be “rich in faith,” and good works. You may have pleasure; but when you are merry, sing psalms and make melody in your hearts to the Lord. In your spirit, as well as in your aim, you should differ from the world. Waiting humbly before God, always conscious of his presence, delighting in communion with him, and seeking to know his will, you will prove that you are of heavenly race. And you should be separate from the world in your actions. If a thing be right, though you lose by it, it must be done; if it be wrong, though you would gain by it, you must scorn the sin for your Master’s sake. You must have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. Walk worthy of your high calling and dignity. Remember, O Christian, that thou art a son of the King of kings. Therefore, keep thyself unspotted from the world. Soil not the fingers which are soon to sweep celestial strings; let not these eyes become the windows of lust which are soon to see the King in his beauty-let not those feet be defiled in miry places, which are soon to walk the golden streets-let not those hearts be filled with pride and bitterness which are ere long to be filled with heaven, and to overflow with ecstatic joy.
Then rise my soul! and soar away,
Above the thoughtless crowd;
Above the pleasures of the gay,
And splendours of the proud;
Up where eternal beauties bloom,
And pleasures all divine;
Where wealth, that never can consume,
And endless glories shine.

Study Confirms Benefits of Pregnancy Centers
September 10, 2018

ARLINGTON, VA - Pro-life crisis pregnancy centers are not only providing services which save the lives of unborn babies and women, but they are also saving communities millions of dollars each year, according to a recent report.

The Charlotte Lozier Institute released an 80-page report last week detailing that pro-life pregnancy centers across the nation provided free services last year to two million people and saved communities $161 million. The "A Half Century of Hope, A Legacy of Life and Love" study was conducted by institute researchers who analyzed the impact of 2,600 of the estimated 2,750 centers in the U.S. in 2017.

Services "including pregnancy tests, options consultation, sexual risk avoidance education, parenting and prenatal education, ultrasound and medical services, community referrals, and material support" were offered to women, youth, and men. The study also found that 400,100 free ultrasounds were administered, registered nurses and medical sonographers contributed 400,100 hours of free services last year and 679,600 free pregnancy tests were given out last year. Approximately 67,400 people volunteered at pregnancy centers and 7,500 medical professionals offered their time and skills to conduct services for free. The pregnancy centers also reported having seen around 24,000 clients for after-abortion support and saw over one million students attend community-based sexual risk avoidance education presentations.

The study states, "Recognized as one of the greatest volunteer-based movements in history, pregnancy centers hand down a legacy of love to protect unborn children as well as assist women and men facing some of the most difficult situations life has to offer. Pregnancy centers have grown into a global movement and remain 'a testimony to love in action.' This report highlights the tremendous service contributions of pregnancy centers, several of the incredible life stories in which they have played a significant role, the numerous ways in which centers enhance maternal, women's, and child health, and their massive contributions to family and community well-being in the United States."

Liberty Counsel's case Mountain Right to Life v. Becerra, was sent back from the U.S. Supreme Court to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, after the High Court ruled in National Institute of Family and Life Advocates (NIFLA) v. Becerra that crisis pregnancy centers cannot be forced to promote abortions. Liberty Counsel is now awaiting further action after the Supreme Court sent the case back from Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

In this case, Liberty Counsel represents three pro-life crisis pregnancy centers in Southern California that were forced to promote abortion as a result of the California Reproductive FACT Act. This law forces pro-life crisis pregnancy centers to endorse the government language promoting the abortion message on their front door, in their waiting room, and in every advertisement for the crisis pregnancy center, in 48-point font and in up to 13 languages.

One of Liberty Counsel's clients, the Pregnancy and Family Resource Center in San Bernardino, receives no grants or government money, but their donors are individuals, churches and businesses. This one center alone has 300 appointments and 125 unique clients each month. Flanked by two abortion facilities, the Pregnancy and Family Resource Center is helping to save hundreds of babies every month.

For example, when *Maria (name changed) came to them, she was determined to have an abortion. Yet, after repeatedly visiting the Pregnancy and Family Resource Center for several months, she finally came in one day and said, "OK, I've decided to not abort. What do I do?" With the help of the center's staff, *Maria now has a beautiful little girl whose name means, "light of hope," and this child's life is bringing extended family from Mexico together to spend time with her.

"This recent study by the Charlotte Lozier Institute confirms the priceless value of pro-life pregnancy centers in our communities," said Liberty Counsel Founder and Chairman Mat Staver. "These centers help save the lives of babies and women by providing support which empowers mothers and fathers to make the right choices. Many volunteers give back to their communities by donating services that would typically cost millions of dollars each year. At Liberty Counsel, our mission is to clear the path so these centers can freely accomplish the mission God has given them," said Staver.

The Miraculous Continuity Of Scripture

By JOSEPH FARAH

One of the blessings and curses of the internet is the ability it provides us to read many sermons by both contemporary pastors and those of the past.
It’s a blessing because there is great wisdom and insight to be discovered.
It’s also a curse because of the immense amount of error to be found – especially in teachings found in today’s sermons.
Sometimes I find dogmatic statements by teachers that are wholly untrue. Usually, they are written or spoken to make the erroneous point that something shockingly new, unprecedented and unpredicted in the New Testament – something that represented a complete break with the Old Testament.
Here is one of those statements made very recently by a Pennsylvania pastor who shall remain nameless. (I’m not trying to embarrass any individual, but rather making a point.)
“All throughout the Old Testament there is not one example anywhere of an Israelite addressing God as ‘My Father.’ There were many names for God used, but not ‘Father.'”

Momentarily, I was taken aback. I knew I could think of three or four examples of references to God as Father in the Hebrew Scriptures. But I decided to do a quick survey. I may have missed some, but was able, using the modern tools of Bible study, to find them. I found out the pastor was right. There “is not one example.” There are at least 20 references to God as our Father in the Tanach. And that doesn’t include at least another half-dozen references to Israel as His children.
